Dependent on the Cross

True freedom for every believer comes from one source: the cross of Jesus Christ. Through His death, we are reconciled to God, forgiven of sin, and moved from spiritual death to new life. Our debt of sin is not reduced or managed but completely canceled. Justification and redemption are gifts that come only through the blood of Jesus. No good works, moral living, or religious effort can earn what the cross alone provides. The cross is not just the starting point of salvation; it is the living foundation of the Christian life every single day. We are forever dependent on the cross, and that dependence is not a weakness. It is the greatest freedom we will ever know.

Trusting God is easy when life is going well, but the real test of faith comes when things get hard, prayers go unanswered, and following Jesus costs something. The Apostle Paul faced both agonizing decisions and ongoing physical suffering, yet he consistently chose dependence on Jesus over independence. When God refused to remove Paul's thorn in the flesh, Paul discovered that his weakness was actually the place where Christ's strength was most clearly displayed. Dependence on Jesus is not about having a pain-free life. It is about surrendering your will to His, no matter what comes your way.

The story of the rich young ruler in Luke 18 reveals a timeless truth: the choices we make about following Jesus shape everything. A wealthy young man came to Jesus with a sincere desire for eternal life, but he was looking for something he could earn or accomplish on his own. Jesus lovingly exposed the one thing holding him back, his possessions, and invited him to let go and follow. Sadly, the man walked away, still lost and still sad. Salvation is not something we achieve through effort or moral living. It is a miracle of grace, made possible only through what Jesus accomplished on the cross. He already chose us. Now the question is whether we will choose Him, not just once, but in every decision we face.
